1What is oleotourism?
Oleotourism is the form of food and wine tourism linked to the world of olive oil. In Italy, it has been officially recognized by specific laws (such as Italian Law no. 158/2019), which grant olive oil producers the same status as wine tourism operators in their ability to open facilities for tours, tastings, catering, and hospitality.
It is a response to the growing demand for authentic experiences, tied to the territory and direct contact with producers.
2What do you do at an olive mill during a visit?
During the milling season (October–December)
Visiting an olive mill during the olive harvest and milling campaign is the most complete and immersive experience:
- 1Walk in the olive grove: observe hand harvesting or the use of olive shakers, understand the ripening index, and speak with the harvesters
- 2Tour of the active mill: watch the crushing, the malaxation (gramolazione), and the centrifuge — the scent of a mill in operation is unique and unforgettable
- 3Tasting raw freshly-extracted oil (olive oil must/novello): turbid, bright green, and intensely peppery — an experience you will never forget
- 4Guided tasting of several olive oils with different flavor profiles
Outside of the harvest season
Even outside the harvest season, visiting a well-structured olive mill offers:
- An educational tour of the milling plant with an explanation of the extraction process
- Structured tasting paired with local food products
- Opportunity for direct purchase with a personal connection to the producer
3Why it is worth it
Whoever visits an olive mill returns home with:
- A completely different understanding of what they put on their plate every single day
- The lifelong ability to distinguish a high-quality extra virgin olive oil from a mediocre one
- A direct relationship of trust with the producer
- Sensory memories that are impossible to obtain in any other way
You cannot explain in words the taste of fresh olive oil must just coming out of the separator. It must be experienced.
